Baker College Online Instructor Wins Science Fiction Poetry Award

FLINT, Mich. - Baker College Online instructor Gregory T. Beatty has won the 2005 Rhysling Award from the Science Fiction Poetry Association. Beatty's science fiction entry, titled "No Ruined Lunar City," won under the short poem category and was previously published in Abyss & Apex. He was also nominated for a second poem under the long poem category, titled "The Other Sleeping Beauties," which was published by Strange Horizons.

Beatty, an instructor for six years at Baker College Online, teaches English composition, literature and creative writing.

"Winning this prestigious award is indeed a wonderful accomplishment," said Dr. Julia Teahen, president, Baker College Online. "We're fortunate to have Greg on board to share his creative writing talents with Baker Online students."

The Rhysling Award honors the best science fiction, fantasy or horror poems published during the previous year. The nominees are selected by the membership of the Science Fiction Poetry Association. All of the nominated poems are published in a printed anthology, which is then distributed to the SFPA membership and used as a voting tool. The winning works are reprinted in the Nebula Awards Anthology from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, Inc. They are considered in the science fiction/fantasy/horror specialty field to be the equivalent in poetry of the awards given for "prose" work, or achievement awards given to poets by the writing peers of their own field of literature.

Beatty holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Washington, and a master's degree and Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. He lives in Bellingham, Wash.

The Science Fiction Poetry Association was founded in 1978 to bring together poets and readers interested in science fiction poetry.
